Project 2048: The Mathematics of Rank and the Limits of Conscience

December 17, 2025Aztec mythology is often perceived as one of the darkest mythologies in history, yet it carries some of the richest symbolic narratives ever recorded. One of its most powerful figures is Tezcatlipoca, known as the Smoking Mirror.
The name Tezca Games draws not only from this mythological figure’s power, but from the deep meaning the symbol itself represents.
The Symbolism of the Smoking Mirror
In Aztec culture, Tezcatlipoca embodies creation and destruction, chaos and balance, order and transformation. What makes him truly unique is the symbol he carries: the Smoking Mirror.
This mirror represents two concepts:
- Smoke – The unknown, the uncertain, the hidden.
- Mirror – Truth, reflection, and facing oneself.
Isn’t creativity exactly like this?
Ideas begin in smoke—formless, ambiguous, directionless.
As time passes, the smoke clears, and the true idea, the reflection, begins to appear.
Why Tezca?
The name Tezca lies at the very heart of this metaphor.
As someone who is just beginning to learn game development, I’ve noticed a few things:
- Creation is a process of transformation.
- Symbols communicate more powerfully than words.
- Seeing the truth requires courage.
Smoke is the beginning of creativity.
The mirror is its final form.
For me, this metaphor became a powerful tool to stay motivated and to give form to the abstract nature of learning game development.
Tezca Games represents the balance between these two states.
My intention is not just to “make a game.”
I want to use games as a medium — a way to express ideas, to highlight things that matter to me, and to speak through interactive experiences.
The Importance of Symbolism in Aztec Culture
For the Aztecs, symbols were never mere decoration. A symbol conveyed:
- Power
- Rank
- Wisdom
- Order
- Identity
The visual style used in Tezca Games today—its geometric forms, lines, and color choices—is all informed by this understanding.
Every line is intentional.
Every symbol carries meaning.
Smoke and Mirror in Game Development
When a game idea first emerges, it is in a state of “smoke”:
Unclear, raw, and dark.
During development:
- mechanics begin to form,
- the visual identity becomes clearer,
- a sense of design rhythm emerges
(though this is still something I struggle with).
Eventually, the “mirror” reveals itself:
The game takes its true shape.
The Smoking Mirror becomes a perfect metaphor for the natural progression of game development.
Conclusion: A Modern Brand Born from Ancient Myth
Because I use the name Tezca Games, it might appear to be the name of a studio.
But in truth, this is not a studio—
it is a personal workshop.
A space where learning itself becomes a philosophy of creation.
For me, what matters is capturing the meaning behind the visible, shaping uncertainty into form, speaking through symbols, and inviting players into that journey.
Smoke is the beginning.
The mirror is the reflection.
And the journey of Tezca begins right between the two.
